A high speed, heavy payload aircraft capable of long range autonomous missions. Condor put my design and engineering skills to the test. My optimizations in weight, stiffness, strength, range, and speed, presented significant challenges that required in depth testing and verification to ultimately create the most advanced multi rotor UBC UAS has ever seen.

VTOL

This was a short project aimed at getting a proof of concept VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircraft in the air as quickly as possible. For simplicity, I used an old off the shelf 1100mm flying wing I had on hand. The lift motors and ESCs were pulled from a 250mm class mini quad, paired with larger 6in props for better low speed lifting capacity. I used the stock pusher motor and prop as it was deemed sufficient. Finally a pixhawk one was installed with only the essentials carefully crammed into the small cargo bay (including a pitot tube air speed sensor. Several hover flights and partial transitions to forward flight and back to hover were achieved. Unfortunately only one full transition to forward flight was achieved while I was not present which resulted in a complete crash due to pilot error.

Evo Car Share Roof Rack Protection

With challenges in real world contracts and customer requirements, this contract job for Evo resulted in a final reliable product that was installed in several cars for company testing. The device successfully alerted drivers of car before they caused damage to a bike rack mounted on the roof by driving under lower clearances like into a parkade.

The Snowzy

As part of a second year design course, I worked on designing and building a heated phone case to extend battery life in cold weather. Lithium batteries performance significantly degrades at low temps so it is desirable to keep the device temperature above 10°C. We built a heated case allowing sustained use of the phone in sub-zero conditions. We proved an extension in battery life of up to 2x while using the case in sub zero conditions.
